SCLC to honor MLK with St. Thomas Aquinas luncheon
RIO RANCHO — The Southern Christian Leadership Conference of New Mexico will host its 15th annual luncheon Jan. 20 at St. Thomas Aquinas in Rio Rancho to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.
Dr. Clayborn Carson, Stanford professor and founding director of the MLK Jr. Research and Education Institute, will speak about King’s life as well as his own research and experiences. Carson attended the March on Washington in 1963 and detailed that experience in his book “Martin’s Dream: My Journey and the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.”
In an About the Author essay, Carson says the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King chose him to edit and publish her husband’s letters in 1985, which he used to start the King Papers Project.
His work looked deeply into black history and the impact it has on behavioral sciences, which he teaches at many universities.
The luncheon, slated for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., is ticketed. For more information, visit sclc.org.
