RRFR receives equipment grant from DFA
RIO RANCHO — Rio Rancho Fire Rescue is one of 30 departments receiving funds from the Department of Finance and Administration.
Thirty fire departments across New Mexico will receive a combined $1.6 million in state grants to purchase protective gear and life-saving equipment, according to a March 20 release.
RRFR chief James Wenzel stated that the department will receive $26,112.50, “which will enable the department to purchase additional personal protective equipment (PPE) including turnout coat, pants and helmets.”
“This funding supports RRFR’s commitment to its members with state-of-the-art PPE and equipment, enabling crews to continue operating safely and effectively in the performance of their duties in serving our communities,” he said.
In 2024, DFA funded 190 new firefighter and EMS positions statewide, the release states.
“Local communities, especially rural and remote areas, have long struggled with fire and emergency medical responses due to extended response times, large coverage areas, and a shortage of first responders,” it adds.
Wenzel said RRFR received funding for 11 firefighters under the 2024 grant that DFA references.
Bernalillo Fire Department was also a grant recipient.
