FARGO, North Dakota — Cleveland High School’s Roman Luttrell won the Greco-Roman 120-pound weight class national championship in North Dakota July 19.

“I have a massive support system that played a huge role in my success, and I’m grateful for the countless hours spent on technique and live sessions with my partners and coaches who push me every day,” Luttrell said. “I also want to thank everyone back home who kept me in good spirits over the weekend.”

During the national championships, Luttrell had a 7-0 record with wins over opponents from Idaho, Virginia, Indiana, Alabama, South Carolina, New York and Minnesota.

“I give all the glory to my Lord and savior Jesus Christ. To prepare for this tournament, I knew I had to be in top shape, so I enlisted my dad’s help in my training camp and did multiple workouts at the top of the Sandia Crest, as well as countless cardio sessions that paid off in my matches this weekend,” Luttrell said. “My dad is my biggest inspiration, and I’m grateful to have won my third national championship with him in my corner. I love you, Mom and Dad.”

Luttrell is the first New Mexican Greco national champion since 1983 and the second ever from New Mexico.

“It’s been 39 years since New Mexico had a junior Greco national champion, so I’m thrilled to have broken that streak,” Luttrell said.

Luttrell was recently listed as a top-25 wrestler on the MatScouts’ national ranking list and has all been cemented his status as one of the premier wrestling talents in the country with the win.

The incoming senior will suit up for the Storm and is a four-time state champion with a chance for a fifth.

Luttrell has already visited schools like Northern Colorado, Utah Valley and North Dakota State University.
