Man found guilty of child rape in Sandoval County
SANDOVAL COUNTY — A man has been found guilty of four counts of child rape in Sandoval County.
A jury in the 13th Judicial District Court in Sandoval County found Rollie Bruvold, 75, address unknown, guilty of four counts of criminal sexual penetration of a child under 13, Attorney General Raul Torrez announced March 19.
The victims, who were 3-14 years old when they were targeted by Bruvold, told police about several encounters that happened while camping with their family in Jemez, according to a criminal complaint.
The complaint states that when Bruvold was interviewed by investigators, he told them he thought it was natural for daughters to want to “be lovers to their fathers.”
Bruvold will serve up to 72 years in prison for rapes that occurred during camping trips between 1985-95, the announcement states.
"This man is a dangerous, calculating predator who spent years hunting for opportunities to abuse children, leaving them with trauma that will last a lifetime," said Torrez. "Our office will always stand with survivors, and we will not stop until those who exploit the most vulnerable face the full weight of the law. Today's guilty verdict is a crucial step toward justice, and I am committed to ensuring he remains behind bars for as long as the law allows."
Bruvold was sentenced in 2002 to 108 years in prison for crimes related to the sexual abuse of multiple children. In February 2020, however, the New Mexico Court of Appeals overturned all but one of his convictions, a decision that resulted in an 18-year sentence, according to the announcement.
“Following that ruling, Attorney General Torrez, then serving as Bernalillo County District Attorney, joined forces with the Office of the Attorney General to indict Bruvold on additional charges and ensure that this predator remained behind bars, where he belongs,” it states.
Bruvold will remain in custody pending sentencing, which will be scheduled for a future date.
