Leaders in RR reflect on Turtle Mountain celebrating 25 years

A home-grown brewery and pizzeria celebrated yet another year of serving Rio Rancho last month.
Turtle Mountain got its start 25 years ago with an enthusiastic Nico Ortiz aspiring to own his own brewpub in a dream that existed since he was 16 years old. That dream became a reality when Ortiz celebrated his grand opening with former Mayor John Jennings and the Rio Rancho Chamber of Commerce in 1999.
"Our biggest achievement is that we are still around 25 years later. Through Y2K, the bursting of the dot-com bubble, the 2008 real estate meltdown, and last, but certainly not least, COVID. Through six different mayors, numerous city managers and iterations of the governing body, Turtle Mountain has not only survived but thrived in Rio Rancho. We have become 'a place where regulars and visitors alike could come in and feel like they are part of the family.' My goal was a place that felt like 'Cheers.' Mission accomplished," Ortiz said.
The feat of making it to 25 years has not gone unnoticed by leaders in Rio Rancho, either. Jerry Schalow, president and CEO of the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce, is grateful for the business' success.
"Marking a quarter-century alongside Turtle Mountain Brewing Company feels like honoring a cherished Rio Rancho landmark. It's not just a place to dine and drink; it's a pillar of our neighborhood," he said.
To Schalow, the quality of the food and ales are a reflection of Ortiz's ingenuity.
"Turtle Mountain has delighted customers for 25 years and has earned a special spot in the hearts of New Mexicans. Nico Ortiz's unwavering pursuit of quality shines through in every aspect, from their inventive pizzas to their ever-evolving beer lineup. Moreover, under Nico's guidance, an exceptional team has flourished, with many members proudly serving for over a decade," he continued.
One of Turtle Mountain's goals is to employ people who get to know the customer and promote regulars by making people feel welcome. More than that, Schalow says Turtle Mountain has inspired business to grow in Rio Rancho.
"They have steadfastly supported the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce, actively engaging in community events and showcasing Rio Rancho's allure as a vibrant locale for living, working and recreation. Their success story serves as an inspiration to budding entrepreneurs, fostering a dynamic business environment within Rio Rancho," he said.
Now, Turtle Mountain has two Rio Rancho locations — in Enchanted Hills and on Southern Boulevard. Schalow says the Enchanted Hills location has made The Block, which opens June 1, possible.
Schalow isn't the only one grateful for the brewpub's investment. Mayor Gregg Hull says he wants to personally congratulate Ortiz and Turtle Mountain on their success.
"I think the name Turtle Mountain and the city of Rio Rancho are synonymous. They are a fundamental part of our history, and they're going to be an integral part of our future," Hull said.
He added he would like to see Turtle Mountain reach its 50th anniversary.
