RIO RANCHO — The Rio Rancho Players have announced a new theater production in new digs.

The production company announced its eighth show, “It Happened at the Airport,” April 10-26, in a 90-seat theater located within the Hilltop Plaza Shopping Center, 1640 NM-528 SE, in Rio Rancho, according to a news release.

“We hope that we’re going to fill the theater for all eight performances over the three weekends that we will be performing,” Mel Sussman, founder, producer and director of The Rio Rancho Players, said. “This is the class that is made up of all local residents … and I think that’s an exciting thing about community theater.”

“It Happened at the Airport” consists of two one-act plays about travelers getting stuck while waiting for their flight. The entire show is expected to last over two hours, with intermission.

The Rio Rancho Players, now in its seventh year of performing, believe it has found a permanent location to stage productions after “hopscotching” for the duration of its existence, according to Sussman. The theater shares space with R4Creating.

“It’s probably the most advantageous theater location that we’ve had thus far,” Sussman said. “It gives us the opportunity to build a permanent stage and lighting. (We will) be able to perform quality theater.”

The performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. April 10, 18 and 25, while matinees are scheduled for 2 p.m. April 11, 12, 19, 25 and 26.

An additional performance in which patrons gain admission by donating is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 18.

“This is an ensemble performance that allows me to utilize a variety of community theater (cast members),” Sussman said. “It’s a production that appeals to all ages.”

General admission tickets cost $25, while senior, student, military and educator tickets are $20.

Tickets can be purchased online at rr-cc.org or at Beast N’ Nuggets Doggie Daycare (4035 Peggy Road SE), Furniture Cottage (2345 Southern Blvd. SE), and Beyond Mail N’ Print (4405 Jager Drive NE C-4). If available, tickets can also be purchased at the theater one hour prior to the curtain call.
