Wysong Watch: After collegiate finale, Cleveland alum declares for NFL Draft
Arizona Wildcat and Rio Rancho native Wysong sets eye to pros
TUCSON, Ariz. — It has been a while since the Observer has featured a new installment of the “Wysong Watch,” but after Wednesday’s news, this could be the biggest one yet.
Announced via X, Cleveland High alum and University of Arizona wide receiver Luke Wysong has declared for the NFL Draft.
“I am happy to start this new journey and chapter for football,” Wysong wrote in a statement.
Wysong, who was with the University of New Mexico for four seasons before joining the Wildcats as a redshirt senior, is coming off a 24-reception, 278 receiving-yard season with Arizona.
The Wildcats finished 9-4 on the season, making it to the Trust & Will Holiday Bowl in San Diego, where Wysong would tally three catches in what would be his final collegiate game.
“To the University of Arizona, you are such a special place for me,” Wysong wrote. “From all those nights in the indoor, to the hot summer days, to finally walking at senior night, you gave me an experience I didn't know I needed. Taught me so many life lessons and allowed me to grow on and off the field tremendously.”
Wysong was one of 46 players selected for the Biletnikoff Award Watch List in August as he was coming off a season as the Lobos' leader in receiving yards with 840 on 69 catches.
“To the University of New Mexico, I want to say thank you for supporting me and always taking me in as someone who can represent our state,” Wysong wrote. “I was given an opportunity to play in front of my hometown for several years, and I enjoyed every moment and person who cheered for me. There were so many coaches who believed and helped me out that I am forever grateful for.”
Before heading to University Stadium in 2021, Wysong was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for his senior year to wrap up a stellar tenure with the Storm. Wysong’s run included a state championship victory in 2019.
Now, he will look to put Rio Rancho and the state of New Mexico on the map at the pro level.
“For me, football has always been my everything. It has allowed me to turn my dreams into reality, taken me places I've never imagined, and taught me lessons I will never forget,” Wysong wrote. “There has been so many ups and downs, but I wouldn't trade a second of this journey for anything.”
Wysong will now prepare for the pre-draft process, including the Wildcats' pro day and potentially the Big 12 Conference pro day, two opportunities for NFL scouts to get a look at the local talent before draft day arrives in April.
The NFL Draft is set for April 23-25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
