Cleveland, Rio Rancho girls soccer teams open Friday in Las Cruces

The Cleveland High School girls soccer team opens the 2022 season Friday at 5 p.m. against Mayfield High School in Las Cruces.

The Storm remain in Las Cruces to meet Centennial Saturday morning at 11.

Coach Greg Rusk (112-64-11) begins his 11th season on the sideline, hoping to get the Storm back into the postseason, which they missed out on in 2020 and ’21. CHS was 9-6-2 last season, and 2-4-2 in District 1-5A contests.

The Rio Rancho High School girls soccer team opens its 2022 season Friday at 5 p.m. at Centennial High School in Las Cruces.

The Rams are in Las Cruces again Saturday, facing Mayfield at 11 a.m.

First-year head coach Todd Doss, no stranger to the program, assumes the reins after longtime coach Uwe Balzis decided to retire.

The Rams were 13-80-1 overall in 2021, and 4-3-1 in District 1-5A. They were knocked out of the postseason after a 1-0 loss at Cibola in the quarterfinals. The Cougars went on to win the 5A championship.
