CANDIDATE COLUMN
Alexandria Piland
Hello! I’m Alexandria Piland, a proud Latina, mom, retired teacher, former small business owner, and candidate for mayor of Rio Rancho. I’ve lived, worked and raised my family here, and I’m running because Rio Rancho deserves leadership that listens first, acts transparently, and puts people ahead of politics. I’m running to meet residents where they are, hear their concerns, and deliver real results, not excuses.
Public safety
Safety is the foundation of a strong, thriving community. I will support our police while focusing
on smart prevention, staffing, response times and community trust. I will coordinate with county
partners, courts and service providers to make public safety both tough on crime and smart
about prevention.
Infrastructure & roads
Residents consistently highlight roads, drainage and stormwater management as top priorities. I will ensure maintenance comes before expansion, approve growth only with funded infrastructure plans, and provide transparent project timelines. We’ll pursue state and federal funding so local taxpayers aren’t shouldering the full cost.
Growth, development & housing
Growth is coming, but it must be managed responsibly. I will support smart zoning, housing options for families, seniors, and workers, and efficient permitting for responsible developers. Growth should enhance neighborhoods, not overwhelm them. Water protection and environmental stewardship will guide every development decision.
Economic development & jobs
Economic growth should strengthen our local economy and create good jobs for residents. I will prioritize local hiring, support small businesses, and attract industries that align with our workforce and infrastructure, keeping talent in Rio Rancho instead of sending it elsewhere.
Families, youth & activities
Rio Rancho should be a city where families can raise children locally without having to travel to Albuquerque for opportunities. I will invest in parks, libraries, recreation programs, and after- school activities that give our youth safe places to learn, play, and thrive. When families can grow here and kids have access to enriching programs, our community becomes stronger and more connected.
Transparency & community engagement
Residents deserve to understand city decisions, even when they’re tough. I will hold regular community meetings, communicate clearly, and use both technology and face-to-face engagement to ensure every voice is heard.
Collaboration & Native sovereignty
Progress comes from working together. I will engage residents, educators, labor, conservationists, and neighboring governments, including tribal nations, respecting Native sovereignty and building partnerships based on trust, accountability and shared responsibility.
Rio Rancho is at a crossroads. Families want affordable living, safe neighborhoods, strong infrastructure, and honest leadership. I’m ready to serve with integrity, urgency, and respect for every resident. I’d be honored to earn your vote.
