RIO RANCHO — A monumental first season, ending with an exclamation point.

On Feb. 7-8, the University of New Mexico women's club hockey team closed out its season with a two-game sweep of the Los Alamos Atomics.

Playing out of the McDermott Athletic Center, the Lobos completed a 13-game schedule that started late September, marking their first season in action since the club began in 2024.

The season took UNM across the Southwest, playing in Utah, Colorado and Arizona. With the program ineligible for the ACHA playoffs as they are still in their infancy, one last weekend at the MAC would be their season swan song.

New Mexico took both matchups, 5-1 and 3-1, for their first series sweep of the year and in program history.

Friday’s contest was headlined by Tori Hedges and Sophia Luna, both posting two-goal games in the victory. Brielle Akagi was the table setter for the Lobos all night long, tallying three assists.

On top of the three stars, BreAnna Taylor netted a goal as well in the five-goal triumph.

Hedges would continue her scoring tear on Saturday with another goal, making it a three-score weekend for the forward. Taylor was active on the stat sheet once again with a one-goal, one-assist night.

On defense, Bella Luke and Peyton Swanson combined for a masterful weekend in net, holding the Atomics to one goal per game, the lowest opponent goal average in a series on the season.

The clock ran out on the Lobos' victory and their season at the MAC in what the program hopes is just a small step in the growth of the new club.

Off the ice, the growth continues. More eyes and sponsors land on the newly found Ice Lobos, with the team picking up some donations and sponsorships throughout the last few months.

The program has worked with the NM College Hockey Boosters Club, a group supporting both the women's and men's teams, collaborating on events such as Krispy Kreme fundraisers.

For recruiting, more and more young talents look toward sporting the cherry red, such as forward Izzy La Valle. La Valle signed on with the Lobos after previously playing with the New Mexico Ice Wolves, with more recruits to come as the offseason takes off.

With a team, boosters and community behind them, the potential for this young program grows by the day. La Valle, Hedges, and the rest of the Lobos will now prepare for their next step as a program in the 2026-27 season.
