Interim no more: Gomez named head coach for Rams baseball
Rio Rancho High School has named its second head baseball coach in school history.
David Gomez, who has served as the interim head coach for the Rams since Ron Murphy was placed on administrative leave in January, has officially been tapped for the position, Rio Rancho Public Schools announced May 23.
The Rams were No. 2 in the polls for most of the 2024 season and finished with a record of 25-5 after falling in a semifinal contest to Cleveland High School.
"We are excited to have Coach Gomez lead our Ram baseball program. His vast experience and proven track record in coaching at various levels will be invaluable to our student-athletes, and we expect to see him lead the team to new heights," said RRPS Executive Director of Athletics Todd Resch.
"I would like to thank the RRHS community for the opportunity, and my wife and kids, for the support to pursue this endeavor," Gomez said. "I am humbled to be entrusted to coach such great players and work with such a great staff.
"I would be remiss if I didn't say it's bittersweet," Gomez added. "With that being said, I thank coach Murphy for making me a part of this Ram Family. I have big shoes to fill and a tradition to honor. I'm excited to get to work and look forward to the 2025 season."
"Coach Gomez is a great coach and one of my best hires," Murphy posted on Facebook. "I am 100% in support of coach Gomez."
Gomez has been with RRHS baseball since 2021, coming on as the team's pitching coach. He has a master's degree in sports administration from New Mexico Highlands University and played college baseball at the New Mexico Military Institute and Southern University in Louisiana.
He has served as an assistant coach and recruiter for NMMI, Frank Phillips College and Alcorn State University. Gomez was also an assistant coach for the French National baseball team and was the head coach for Eastern New Mexico University for six years, leading the team to its first post-season win in school history.
Gomez's wife, Charity, is the head coach for the Cleveland High School volleyball team.
