BERNALILLO — The Sandoval County Board of County Commissioners approved another member to the University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center Board of Advisors.

Commissioner Josh Jones suggested that Dr. Mariam Campos-Marquetti was a good selection for the position.

“I have the absolute honor and privilege to be able to introduce Dr. Mariam Campos-Marquetti, the director of Health and Human Services from the Pueblo of Santa Ana,” Jones said.

He added that she has more than two decades of experience in public health.

Campos-Marquetti has a long list of academic distinctions, including a concentration in health science from the University of Cumberland.

“Her dissertation focuses on social determinants of health literacy and diabetes outcomes in rural America. She also earned a master’s in public health and epidemiology from Eastern Washington University and a master of science and management and leadership from Western Governors University, along with the Bachelor of Science and public health,” Jones said. “She’s had leadership roles in senior health, community wellness, and public health services, where she has successfully expanded access to preventative care to cure millions of dollars in grant funding and build collaborative partnerships to address health care cuts.”

The doctor has also focused on making sure “underserved and underrepresented” communities get a voice in health policy and planning, according to Jones. He said there is also a focus on behavioral health initiatives in the county.

The appointment was an honor for Campos-Marquetti.

“I’ve lived in the state of New Mexico for the last 25 years, where I’ve worked with tribal communities. I understand the need for increased health care access, as well as the inequities that exist, not just amongst native populations but our overwhelmingly large rural population throughout Sandoval County and the state,” she said.
