Iris sale blossoms in Sabana Grande Rec Center
RIO RANCHO — The annual Iris Show, hosted by the Enchanted Vista Iris Society May 3 at the Sabana Grande Recreation Center, was a success, according to the hosts.
Teresa Romine, a member of the Iris Society, said the day went well.
"We didn't have as many entries. We usually have more entries, but we're satisfied," she said.
Before the sale, entries were judged for ribbon placing. While stand-alone irises were judged, the show also included intricate designs with irises and photography focused on irises.
"I think our designs came out beautiful. The people that entered all the designs, they're just beautiful," Romine said.
She said the sale went well, too. People could buy different varieties of irises. There were also some "unknown" breeds of iris for sale. The society also sold fertilizer for people wanting to get serious about planting irises.
The society was also actively looking for new members. Romine said the sale is important for the the community.
"It's important to bring us together to know that we're out here, there are clubs that are designed for a specific flower," she said. "We just need more exposure."
The recreation center was full of colorful irises, varying in breed, including some cross-breeds. Designs had a variety of components from tea pots to handmade sculptures and more. Photographs got creative with angles and subject matter.
Attendees participated in a vote throughout the sale for people's choice as well.
