RIO RANCHO — On Sept. 20, Genesis' Rio Rancho Center held a special celebration for four of their residents who reached the incredible milestone of 100 years of age.

"Not a lot of people get that far, and it's hard to say this because I am going to cry ... so, I am kind of amazed. I love these people, I love these people, and that's why I knew I had to do something," said Riza Baxa, activities director at the Genesis Rio Rancho Center.

The residents honored were Portia Moyers, Lena Criswell, Ruth Pershall and Elizabeth Massey.

"She swears to vitamins. She takes vitamins every morning for most of her life. She is one of nine, and she's the only one left," Cindy Massey said of her mother, Elizabeth Massey.

Each honoree was given a special "100 years" ribbon, and the room was decorated with balloons and streamers. And a special cake was delivered to celebrate reaching triple digits.

After learning that reporter from the Rio Rancho Observer was in attendance, Criswell wanted everyone to know that she is from Marlin, Texas, and hopes that The Marlin Democrat knows that she reached 100 years of age.

According to Al Saucedo, who is the director of marketing and admissions, the centurion party is not just a celebration of their age but a tribute to their resilience and the legacies they have built.

Saucedo also provided some words for the honorees. Each individual also provided their secret to living to 100 years.

• Lena Criswell (Sept. 20, 1924) has witnessed countless changes since her birth, from the Great Depression to the rise of technology. A passionate gardener, Lena has enjoyed nurturing plants and flowers and has always used her green thumb to bring joy to those around her.

Secret to living 100 years: "Be happy, I think. Just be happy," Criswell said.

• Elizabeth Massey (July 27, 1924) has a rich history shaped by perseverance and strength. She has experienced significant cultural shifts, having lived through World War II, the civil rights movement and the moon landing. Elizabeth is known for her artistic talents, creating beautiful works that reflect her vibrant spirit and experiences.

Secret to living 100 years: "Good living, good life," Massey said.

• Portia Moyers (Oct. 12, 1924) has dedicated her life to serving others, a passion ignited during her early years. Whether through her volunteer work or the stories she shares about her travels, Portia has always fostered a connection with those around her, embodying kindness and generosity in every action.

Secret to living 100 years: "She used to hike every day; she used to also do gymnastics, and she would also say to drink bourbon!" Moyers' former caregiver, Sandra Licano, jokingly said.

• Ruth Pershall (May 13, 1923) has a unique perspective on history, having experienced both the trials and triumphs of the 20th century. From the roaring 1920s to the digital age, Ruth has adapted beautifully. An avid storyteller, she captivates listeners with tales of her youth and the wisdom she has gleaned over the decades.

Secret to living 100 years: "I give God all the credit ... he's at the wheel," Pershall said.
