LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Where are all the birds?

Published Modified

My bird seed goes unnoticed this winter. The little red-headed house finch who always visited our back yard previous years is not here. This past summer, I noticed the number of birds in our backyard dwindled down to nothing. I live in a Rio Rancho HOA. What has happened? Is it the harsh chemicals the HOA spray on the front yard decorative stones? Is it the out-of-state landlord ordering a large healthy shade tree cut down next door where the birds might have found refuge?

We have shrubs and a backyard garden that has attracted birds in the past. What can we do? Will the time come when we have to go to a zoo to see and hear birds? My backyard without birds is the saddest sound I have ever heard. Have you noticed?
