LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Key part of Arizona's success missing

Published Modified

Dear Paul Guessing,

In your letter regarding how far ahead of us Arizona is, you paint a rosy picture, but you conveniently left out one massive influence on their success — Barry Goldwater.

He was an impressive man, a major general in the Air Force reserve, a wealthy businessman leading Goldwaters department stores, and a strong politician, even trying for the presidency.

If he had been born in New Mexico instead of Arizona, we would be the leader. Goldwater had enormous influence in steering things to Arizona. Lucky for them. Unfortunate for us. And playing catchup is never fun.
