LETTER TO THE EDITOR: An appeal for logical thought
In a political ad published in the Rio Rancho Observer on March 20, 2025, the Democratic Party of Sandoval County criticized the “An Appeal to Heaven” flag. They claimed the flag today symbolizes hate, division and intolerance. However, no evidence was provided to support these emotionally charged accusations within our community.
Historically, the original flag, which featured a pine tree and the words “An Appeal to Heaven,” represented the American colonists' resistance to British rule. In times of severe hardship — when the colonists were outmatched in terms of resources, numbers and military strength — their only hope to save this start-up country was placed in God. In their darkest moments, facing overwhelming odds, they called out to God, and in response, a nation was born.
As the recent election approached, many of us recalled a time when this country cherished faith in God, respected one another, and valued the family unit with a mother and father. A time when we loved and nurtured our children, teaching them to love God, honor their country, and even respect those with whom they disagreed.
Today, we watch as our once-beautiful democracy appears to be crumbling. We witness a flood of lies, deceit and deception that threaten to tear apart the very foundation this nation was built on. We are disheartened by the inability to discern basic truths, such as the difference between the sexes, the definition of life, or even the meaning of love. In the face of such confusion, we turn to the only hope that remains — one far greater than any man, nation, or movement: we turn to a holy God to save our country.
Finally, I call upon the Democratic Party to reflect on their own actions, which often mirror the very things they accuse others of. Before condemning those who truly love them, I ask them to consider the intentions behind the symbols and beliefs they criticize.
