CANDIDATE COMLUM

Jack Torres, Bernalillo mayoral candidate

Jack Torres

Bernalillo is community. Bernalillo is history. Bernalillo is culture. Bernalillo is diversity.

Our shared responsibility and commitment is to honor our storied past while embracing an even better future. How have we been accomplishing this ?

Some 2025 highlights:

• $5.4 million Capital Outlay appropriation added to $2.6 million equals $8 million for new fire station.

• $4.2 million pedestrian trail completed.

• $2.9 million Main Street Streetscape Phase IV funded, construction early 2026.

• $2.7 million Old Hwy 44 road and bridge rehabilitation completed.

• $2.5 million water system improvements funded, under construction.

• $2.4 million wastewater improvements funded, under construction.

• $900,000 Capital Outlay for another new fire engine.

• $835,000 Federal Community Energy Efficiency Development Grant for seniors funded.

• $250,000 Government Results and Opportunity (GRO) grant completed

• $22,000,000 in new projects for our community without raising taxes.

Although we are proud of our small-town ambiance, we are big on events. Our annual Nighttime Christmas Parade and Councilor Dale Prairie Christmas Tree Lighting drew record crowds. Thanks to widespread community support our Christmas fund, coat drive and school supply drives all enjoyed tremendous success. Community pride is not just an idea; it is evident in continued generosity.

Every department exhibits continuous improvement and growth. Our fire department resulted in the town’s ISO rating improving from 5 to 3. Police department now includes two full-time detectives, two animal control officers, our first-ever K-9 officer, and new technology. Information Technology has updated our systems into the 21st century. The Martha Liebert Public Library and the Bernalillo Community Museum have evolved into educational and cultural centers with a wide expanse of programs. Our water and wastewater systems consistently meet and exceed all federal and state standards.

Fiscal soundness. Our financial audits attest to our financial strength, demonstrated by “unmodified opinions”. We have paid off all debt in our General Fund. We have not increased taxes.

Bernalillo’s leadership begins with a Governing Body united in supporting progress, and our administrative team has never been stronger. Our exceptional staff does the heavy lifting, transforming ideas and contracts into real-life assets for all of us.

Experience in today’s world matters. What matters more is results. My hope is that voters will acknowledge our many successes throughout our town and know that we are ready and able to bring more results to Bernalillo.
