RIO RANCHO — On the same day Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull announced he would not seek re-election in March, Councilman Paul Wymer announced his candidacy for the seat.

Wymer has sat on the Rio Rancho Governing Body for six years and served an additional six years on the Planning and Zoning Board, according to a press release, and now says he’s ready “to lead the next chapter for the City of Vision.”

“Rio Rancho is a special place, a community that works hard, looks out for each other, and takes pride in what we’ve built together,” Wymer said. “I want to keep that spirit alive and keep pushing forward on the things that matter most: safe neighborhoods, good jobs, and a strong quality of life for every resident.”

The councilman has been a resident of Rio Rancho since 1982, the release states. “We’ve seen real success with responsible growth, improved roads, and strong public safety,” he said of his time of service. “But there’s more work to do, and I believe experience, collaboration, and a shared vision can take us even further. ... I’m proud of how far our city has come, but I’m even more excited about where we’re headed. As mayor, I’ll work every day to make Rio Rancho an even better place to live, work and raise a family.”

Wymer is the second person to announce their intent to run for mayor, joining Sandoval County Commissioner Mike Meek in the race. The March 3, 2026, municipal elections will also have city council districts 2, 3 and 5 on the ballot as well as a municipal judge seat and several bond questions on the ballot. All seats are four-year terms.
