Published Modified

A gas leak led to the closure of Golf Course Road closed April 23k. As of 3 p.m. the road is open and the gas leak gas been contained.

"Southbound traffic is being diverted onto May Circle; northbound traffic is diverted onto Chianti Road. Social media will be updated when the roadway is open," the Rio Rancho Police Department wrote.

According to Tim Korte with New Mexico Gas Co., a third-party company was working in the street on Sue Circle SE and hit a half-inch underground natural gas line.

"The work that was being performed typically produces sparks, and we believe a spark ignited the leaking gas," Korte said.

As a safety precaution, crew members shut down natural gas service to two homes on Sue Circle SE.

"The leak was reported at 11:03 a.m. and it was under control at 12:37 p.m. After that, we confirmed that there was no additional leaking gas in the area. Repairs began as soon as it was safe to do so after the leak was controlled. One home already has had gas service restored, and we expect the other to be restored this evening. Also, we confirmed that the street had been marked before the work started to show the approximate location of the gas line, and we confirmed that the markings were accurate," he added.
