New Mexico United soccer player Kalen Ryden stopped by Esther Bone Library to read to a group of families and kids June 25.

Ryden has been with New Mexico United for the past five seasons and plays center back for the team as one of its captains. He is also the all-time New Mexico United leader in clearances, aerial-duels won and blocks as well as being named co-captain four times.

In 2023, Ryden had 153 clearances and won 91 aerial-duels, a club record for United.

“New Mexico United makes an effort to connect with our community as much as possible, including local libraries, schools, community centers and hospitals,” fan experience manager Jules Myers said.

New Mexico United participated in Rio Rancho Library’s Summer Reading Program, which encourages the youth to better their reading literacy.

During the visit, Ryden read two books: “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “Soccer Makes Me Happy.” Then, he held a question-and-answer panel where he was asked hard-hitting questions from the kids including, “What’s your favorite food?” and “What’s your favorite color?”

Ryden has been a busy man as of late. When he’s not stopping attacking forwards on the field or being a dad, he is taking time to travel around the state and give back to the community.

“Kalen Ryden has made over 30 community visits around the state and is an exemplary member of our team, upholding our club ethos of hard work, humility, diligence and action,” Myers said.

On June 29, New Mexico United will play San Antonio FC on the road. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

New Mexico United are the top team in the Western Conference and currently have nine wins, one draw and four losses on the season.
