BERNALILLO — The Merc in Placitas is expanding.

During a special meeting Jan. 3, Sandoval County commissioners approved a motion of approval for a Floor Plan Expansion/Change Intake Application for The Merc.

"I'm very excited that this is before us today, and I hope the commission can fully support this expansion. In addition to the Placitas area, we desperately need more places close that we can enjoy within the community and have some diversity of location. We've kind of had the same things for some years without anything new that could attract folks," she said.

Managing partner Michael Micklos shared that they are really excited to bring some diversity to the community.

"There's going to be good offerings. We're hoping to open up the space for private events that people want to have in the neighborhood, and we're not looking to charge room fees, but minimums to make it really, really accessible to everybody," he said.

He said members of the neighborhood have been helping with woodworking and setting up.

"They're already saying, 'hey, you guys might need more space.' And really, 'let's just get the doors open.'," he said.

Commissioners unanimously approved the motion.
