Southern Sandoval County Arroyo Flood Control Authority (SSCAFCA) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 24 for the Stallion Channel Access project at the corner of Nicklaus Drive and Lariat Road in Rio Rancho.

“The Stallion Channel Access project will provide all-weather access for SSCAFCA’s maintenance personnel. The project will consist of approximately 1.1 miles of a 12-foot wide asphalt surface from Nicklaus Drive to Summer Winds Drive,” a press release states.

It is primarily funded by a grant from the Transportation Project Fund of the New Mexico Department of Transportation with a match from local funds.

When not being used for channel maintenance, the public is invited to use the completed project as a recreational trail. The paved access way created by the project will be incorporated into Black Arroyo Loop Trail (BALT), a combination of city of Rio Rancho and SSCFACA-owned trails.

SSCAFCA is an independent corporate political body with an elected board entrusted with flood and storm water control.
