RIO RANCHO — The new president and chief executive officer of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference is scheduled to speak at an event in Rio Rancho to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

DeMark Liggins, president of the Atlanta-based organization King helped found, will be the keynote speaker for the MLK Jr. celebration luncheon at Fr. Andrew D'Arco Hall, within St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Parish, 15o2 Sara Road SE, Rio Rancho, according to a flyer provided by the church. The event is scheduled to run from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"He's an outstanding young man," said Rev. Charles Becknell, who heads the parish and is also a member of the leadership conference's board. "He's very much aware of what's going on in our country today, and that's one of the reasons why I wanted to bring him here."

Anyone interested in attending can register for the event by logging on to sclcnm.org.
