Sandoval sees increase in voter turnout as Hashimoto wins Corrales mayor's race

2025 Election

Election workers in the “war zone” prepared for votes to come in to the Sandoval County BOE warehouse.

SANDOVAL COUNTY — All 157 Sandoval County precincts are in, and the winners are official for the 2025 regular local election.

The Corrales mayor seat saw perhaps the biggest change after votes came in, with Frederick Hashimoto winning by more than 800 votes to incumbent Mayor James Fahey.

"I'm glad the campaign and election are behind us, and I wish Fred good luck," Fahey said early Nov. 5.

Hashimoto did not yet respond to request for comment.

The two, similar in that they are both Democrats and doctors, debated policies and ideas Oct. 21. The debate was telling of each man's priorities for the village. Fahey had big ideas for the future and ran on what he believed was already in motion for the village. Hashimoto agreed on some of those ideas but ran on the notion of keeping Corrales true to itself while also addressing the front-and-center problems.

The election was in full swing at the Sandoval County Bureau of Elections Warehouse the afternoon of Nov. 4.

Deputy County Clerk Joey Dominguez hinted at the turnout Sandoval would see.

"I think we're a little over 7,000 for the day," he said at 4:30 p.m.

According to Secretary of State website numbers Nov. 5, the county had about an 18% turnout with 20,209 out of the 113,822 voters casting a ballot. This is a small increase from the last local election in 2023, when the county saw about a 15% voter turnout.

Dominguez, on Tuesday, said the "phenomenal" team working on the election is helping to keep things running smoothly.

"Obviously, every election we have has hiccups to start the morning, and today was no different," he said.

Dominguez explained Nov. 6 that votes for Ranchos De Placitas and a school board seat were delayed because they were write-in seats.

"There is no issue with Sandoval County tabulators. A court hearing has been requested to open the ballot boxes and conduct a review of the ballots to ensure that all write-in votes have been counted,” he said.

Dominguez explained that final results would be in at any time because some areas of the county are more than two hours away from the BOE warehouse, where votes have to be delivered for tabulation. Votes will "trickle in" until about 10 p.m., he estimated.

"As soon as we get the Metro, Rio Rancho, we'll try to push those out as quickly as we get them," he said.
