The Rio Rancho High School varsity cheer team won second place at the Universal Cheerleading Association High School Nationals Feb. 10.

The team competed with schools from around the country at Walt Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida and came home as national silver medal holders.

At the Feb. 28 Sandoval County Commission meeting, the RRHS cheer team was honored for its accomplishment.

“We have a great crowd of folks here tonight, and I’m especially excited because we’re going to be recognizing some young people in the audience,” District 1 Commissioner Katherine Bruch said.

Bruch read a proclamation designating Feb. 28 as Rio Rancho High School varsity cheer team day in Sandoval County.“The UCA national cheerleading championship is considered the pinnacle of cheerleading competition for high school cheerleaders across the nation,” Bruch said. “The 2024 UCA national high school cheerleading championship event hosted 1,183 teams from 34 states.”

Twenty-one Rio Rancho High School students and their coaches who placed second in the nation at the event were in attendance at the meeting and gave the commissioners and audience a cheer after they accepted the award.
