The new gym in Corrales officially opened its doors to the public Saturday.

Dozens of people enjoyed food, music and free activities while checking out the new facility.

The village of Corrales showed off what tax dollars, through the approved bonds, have allowed the administration to provide for the village.

“I’m very happy it’s completed,” Mayor James Fahey said.” It is satisfying that we have done it on schedule. Now it’s ready for the community.”

The new community gymnasium for events and sports tournaments is located at 505 Jones Road.

The long-awaited development includes the renovation and expansion of the current gym, which was too small to host the community’s growing needs.

The 11,200-square-foot gym features locker rooms, bleachers, high bay ceilings and an NCAA-sized court for activities such as basketball, volleyball and pickleball. FacilityBuild, an Albuquerque-based design-build contractor, built the complex.

The 35-foot tall structure is the tallest building in Corrales.

The village of Corrales Parks and Recreation Department hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the recreation center in January 2023 to celebrate the beginning of construction on the gym.

Fahey spoke to a crowd of about two dozen, which included several police officers, Fire Chief Anthony Martinez, several councilors and residents of the village, before the groundbreaking.

“Like many things in Corrales, it took a while to get it done,” Fahey said. “First of all because there’s no money. Then you have to generate a lot of interest to get a lot of focus on it to see there really is a need. Then all of a sudden you’ll have this tsunami of interest in getting it done, and, fortunately, we’ve had this tsunami of interest here in the village to get this done.”
