Millions approved for county animal shelter
Construction already underway
BERNALILLO — Millions of dollars for the Sandoval County Animal Resource Center was approved Jan. 7.
Sandoval County commissioners approved the issuance of $7.5 million in general obligation bonds for the project during their regular meeting.
According to Charles Martinez Jr., assistant director of public works, that money is the last bit needed to complete the project's construction.
At this point. construction for the shelter is about 30% complete, according to Martinez. He showed commissioners a photo of excavated land and a newly paved roadway with a roundabout at the end. In total, the land the center will be on spans 22 acres.
The $7.5 million is specifically funding design, construction, and equipping and furnishing the center.
The animal shelter bonds were approved by voters in the regular election on Nov. 5, 2024, and are payable from ad valorem taxes, or property taxes, levied in the county, according to the resolution cover page.
Commissioners expressed gratitude for the money and unanimously approved the issuance.
