Man arrested for burglary, bribing officers in Bernalillo
BERNALILLO — A Cuba man was arrested after allegedly burglarizing a home and bribing police.
Derik Madrid, 22, of Cuba, was arrested for residential burglary, resisting arrest and three counts of bribery of a public officer along US 550.
A K-9 unit was dispatched to a larceny call, according to a criminal complaint, where the caller reported that their cellphone was stolen by Madrid and they were tracking phone. which appeared to be heading west on the highway.
Madrid stole a phone and began transferring funds to his mother without her permission, the complaint states.
When he arrived back at the home, Madrid was detained.
Police searched the vehicle and found a handgun and a high-powered rifle. It adds that Madrid is on conditions of release and is not supposed to be around firearms.
While police were trying to put Madrid in the car, he started yelling at the caller, trying to intimidate them.
He was removed from the patrol vehicle again to be searched but refused to get back in the patrol vehicle and began yelling and attempted to jump up over the car door.
Officers note they had to force him into the car.
Madrid, while being processed, offered to pay officers $20,000 to release him. He also allegedly stated, "You are going to have to shoot me. I am not going to get in that car to go to jail."
Madrid could face up to 12 years in prison if he is convicted.
