Hull will not seek re-election as Rio Rancho mayor
RIO RANCHO — One of the big questions for Rio Rancho’s municipal elections in March has been answered: Mayor Gregg Hull will not be seeking re-election.
The Tuesday announcement cited the decision to shift focus to his gubernatorial campaign after serving three terms as mayor, clearing “the way for a new leader to take office following the election,” which is set for March 3, 2026.
“Serving the people of Rio Rancho these past 12 years has been a privilege. We’ve tackled big challenges together, made progress on our infrastructure, built places where families and seniors feel at home, and set our city up for long-term success,” Hull said. “I am thankful for the team effort in this great city to bring about needed changes and renewed long-term vision. Now, I believe it is time for fresh energy and new leadership to carry the city forward while I shift my focus on running for governor of New Mexico.”
Hull pointed to his work on water preservation, the creation of a permanent fund for the city, quality-of-life improvements and infrastructure work during his 12-year tenure. He also highlighted recognition Rio Rancho has received during those years, including being of the top places to live, raise a family and retire.
He noted that he will serve out his current term before Rio Rancho’s next mayor is elected in March and thanked his family, city staff, council members and the city’s residents “for their support and collaboration over the years.”
In an interview following the announcement, Hull said he waited to make his decision because there were “other pieces falling into place,” including the announcement by District 4 Councilor Paul Wymer that he intends to run for mayor.
Hull said he had a lot of hesitation and second-guessing about his decision because Rio Rancho is “near and dear to my heart.”
“But the (public) comments are overwhelmingly encouraging,” Hull said. “That just shows you the level of relationship that I’ve had with this community.”
Even if he gets elected governor, Hull said he will not sell his Rio Rancho home.
