Former Dem. Party chair announces campaign for Rio Rancho mayor
Alexandria Piland, who led the county party for four years, is running to succeed Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull
RIO RANCHO — A former chairwoman for the Democratic Party of Sandoval County has officially announced her candidacy for Rio Rancho mayor in the upcoming local election.
Alexandria Piland, who led the county party from 2021-25, issued a press release about her intentions Jan. 13. Piland will appear on the ballot during the March 3 election with five other candidates, vying to succeed Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull, who is running for governor.
“This decision wasn’t about ambition — it was about responsibility,” Piland said in the release about her decision. “Leadership means stepping up when your community needs you.”
Her top campaign issues include city growth, water, infrastructure and making Rio Rancho a great place to live.
Piland has experience running for office. In 2024, she ran and lost to Paul Wymer, who represents District 4 on the Rio Rancho Governing Body. Wymer is currently running for mayor.
In a recent interview, Piland said she and her team are ready to campaign and "we're going to take it to the finish line."
