RIO RANCHO — Despite bone-chilling winds April 6, Haven House's annual Family Fun Day was well-attended and the message of support and commitment for domestic violence survivors was received.

Haven House director Estella Weitz says the event is meaningful even if Haven House only reaches a few ears.

"Today we celebrate our commitment to supporting and empowering our children to be the best version of themselves. As the only domestic violence shelter in Sandoval County, we value the support we get from each community member," she said.

Throughout the event, superheroes and other famous characters roamed the groundS to represent that message. Kids of all ages stopped to take photos with them.

Mayor Gregg Hull, who also came to the event to show support, says no community is immune from domestic violence.

"But all of us can work together to eliminate it. It is a preventable problem, and Haven House does an amazing job of bringing awareness providing services not only to the citizens of Rio Rancho but surrounding areas as well," he said.

Haven House has resources for kids subject to domestic violence. Kids that come into the shelter have access to a playground outside, in-shelter learning, counseling and transportation for kids who are still allowed to attend school.

Part of Haven House's message is anyone can be subject to domestic violence. Recently that came to include animals.

"We are starting to accept animals at our shelter," Weitz said.

As usual, the shelter needs volunteers to help out and donations for Haven House residents. All donations go through the AllState on Southern Boulevard.
