A bill sponsored by state Sen. Craig Brandt (R-Rio Rancho) was tabled Wednesday.

The Senate Education Committee voted on a party-line vote to table Senate Bill 109, otherwise known as the Education Freedom Act.

“The Senate Education Committee largely agreed that our education system in New Mexico is broken. What I found shameful was when faced with an opportunity to make significant and forward-thinking changes, the chairman was more interested in protecting the unions than helping disadvantaged children,” Brandt said in response. “Our current system fails most of our children and has disproportionately failed poor and minority students. Until the administration can answer the multi-billion dollar question as to why our current system is failing, I will not accept the status quo as our future.”
