Commission approves correct property tax rates
BERNALILLO — It was “Groundhog Day” for the Sandoval County Commissioners at the commission meeting Sept. 24, according to County Manager Wayne Johnson, because the property tax rates were again accepted by the board.
“We’re back here again to accept the tax rate set by Department of Finance and Administration ... and at this point, I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that all the tax rates are correct,” Johnson told commissioners.
The item was postponed from the previous commission meeting due to incorrect rates.
The county barely made deadline as the county’s ministerial role has to be finished before Sept. 30.
“We ‘approve’ — I like to say accept — the rates and transmit them to the assessor, who sends them along with the property values to the treasurer,” Johnson said via email.
He previously shared frustration that the county has to have a role at all.
“In this order, we do have to get this done this evening as it has to be transmitted to the treasurer and to DFA by the 30th of this month, so we’re going to get it in just under the wire,” Johnson said at the meeting.
Chair Mike Meek double checked that the rates were correct.
“... to the best of our ability. We have heard from everybody, and any corrections that needed to be made have been made with DFA,” Johnson confirmed.
Some of the municipalities and agencies that were incorrect included Corrales, Jemez Springs and the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, Johnson said.
