A holiday PSA from fire and rescue
RIO RANCHO — Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s and everything in between are all fun and games until safety is threatened.
During Thanksgiving week, Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue has reminded the community of a few tips not just for the holidays but as general precautions.
“With holiday season in full effect, RRFR would like to provide the community with a few safety tips,” Chief James Wenzel stated in an email.
He started with a reminder to change out batteries and test smoke alarms, especially if the opportunity to passed during Daylight Savings Time changes.
But there are some potential hazards attached to decorating for the holidays as well.
“Don’t forget to water your Christmas tree daily and have it spaced at least 3 feet from any heat sources. Use only UL-listed lights that have been inspected before using, and never leave the house with tree lights still plugged in. Inspect your fire extinguishers to ensure they are still holding a charge and are easily accessible if needed,” he said.
Cooking on any day can be hazardous, too, Wenzel said.
“When it comes to cooking, make sure you never leave the house with food unattended. Unattended cooking is the number-one cause of holiday fires. Follow manufacture recommendations and guidelines when using a new appliance or cooking technique,” Wenzel stated.
He advised that people use flameless candles, when possible.
He also offered some general fire safety advice: “Always keep matches and lighters away from children and ensure your family has created and practiced a home escape plan,” he added.
Wenzel stated that a few moments to take preventative precautions can make a difference and asked the community to consider this before celebrating.
“Form the entire RRFR department, have a wonderful and safe holiday season!” he said.
