1. The Rio Rancho Parks, Recreation & Community Services is celebrating the final days of summer with its annual Pooch Plunge.

Pooch Plunge, an always popular event featuring a day of swimming exclusively for dogs, is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 7 at Haynes Pool. It is the final activity held at Haynes Pool before closing for the season.

There will be various animal rescue groups and shelters on hand with dogs in search of good homes. There will also be non-food vendors at the event.

While the pool is open for the dogs, all dogs must have current vaccinations, have a copy of the vaccination records, be accompanied by an adult, and have a collar and leash to and from the pool. There is a fee of $5 per dog.

For more information, call Cabezon Community Center at 505-892-4499.

2. Placitas will host its ninth annual garden tour Sept. 8 with seven gardens featured.

Advance online tickets are available at placitasgardentour.com. Advance booklet tickets will be available at select garden and retail stores through Sept. 7.

A bevy of artists will take brush to canvas or lens to landscape during the Placitas Garden Tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8.

The seven artists — Seung Youn, Dana Patterson Roth, Jay Leutwyler, Barbara Morrow, Karen Melody Shatar, Steve McKibbin and Dale Laitinen — will join the gardens, making new work along the tour. Their materials include sculpture, watercolor, pastel, photography and fused glass. They also will show their work at the Placitas Community Library, 453 New Mexico Highway 165, through Sept. 26.

3. The city of Rio Rancho has hosted Councilor Meet ‘n’ Greet events throughout summer, and Bob Tyler is next on the calendar.

4. Valles Caldera National Preserve, recognized as International Dark Sky Park in 2021, will host "Stargazing in the Caldera" at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6. During the program, attendees will be able to learn about stars, constellations and planetary bodies. While the event is free, advance registration is required, and it typically reaches capacity.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own telescope if they own one, but volunteers from local astronomy clubs are often on hand to provide multiple means for viewing. Additionally, guests should also have their own red light, which can usually be found in the outdoor section of a sporting goods store. Some headlamps or flashlights are equipped with a red-light setting.

Advance registration can be made at nps.gov/vall.

New Mexico State Fair

5. The New Mexico State Fair kicks off today at Expo New Mexico. Although it's not in Sandoval County, it is sure to feature Sandoval County residents.

It will also, once again, feature a beer by Ex Novo in Corrales as the official State Fair beer. Barrel Racer Blonde was made available at the brewery last month and is brewed as an ale that drinks like a lager.

The fair continues through Sept. 15, and more information can be found and tickets purchased at statefair.exponm.com/
