Ex Novo, based in Corrales, is once again supplying the official New Mexico State Fair beer this year.

The brewery announced the news and the beer became available in their tap room Aug. 6.

Fair general manager Dan Mourning says with the high standard set by the Dusty Spur beer last year, he and Ex Novo founder Joel Gregory knew they had to "step up their game." This year the beer, called Barrel Racer Blonde, is decorated with a picture of a rodeo woman in gold and white.

"It represents one of the great things that happen in New Mexico and one of the things that happened as far as barrel racing. I mean, rodeo is a huge part of the New Mexico State Fair," Mourning said.

Gregory appreciated the partnership with Mourning, saying it added an extra layer of excitement that this is the second consecutive year they have partnered.

“Being from New Mexico, growing up here and seeing our brands work together so well is humbling,” he said.

According to the beer description, it was brewed as an ale but will drink like a lager.

"This is the result of combining choice pilsner malts with classic American adjuncts corn and rice. Deceptively simple but utterly delicious. A hefty dose of Cascade hops provides a solid bitterness but is easy on the palate. Finished with German noble hop Halertau mittlefruh lends a slight spice to keep the beer refreshing and moreish. Brewed with pride for the New Mexico State Fair," it reads.

The state fair runs Sept. 5-15 at Expo New Mexico.

“New Mexico has a strong craft beer industry, and what better way to show our appreciation for it than brewing our own State Fair beer?” Mourning said.
