COCHITI LAKE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff will host a “midwinter eagle survey” at Cochiti Lake Jan. 11.

Started in 1984, the midwinter eagles survey gathers individuals to help count eagles along survey routes as part of a nationwide effort conducted by the National Wildlife Federation.

The objectives of the midwinter eagle survey are to index the total wintering bald eagle populations in the lower 48 states, determine eagle distribution during a standardized survey period, and identify previously unrecognized areas of important winter habitat.

The midwinter eagle survey will run from 9 a.m. to noon. No pre-registration is required. The event is free and open to the public.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the Cochiti Lake Visitor Center located at 82 Dam Crest Road, Pena Blanca.

Hot coffee and snacks will be provided during registration, which begins at 9 a.m., and the count will begin at 10 a.m.

All volunteers are encouraged to wear warm clothing, and bring spotting scopes, binoculars, and cameras which can aid in spotting eagles.
