RIO RANCHO — There was a lot going on in the world of prep wrestling this weekend; at least, as far as the Rams and Storm were concerned. All four teams (Rams and Storm, boys and girls) and their JV compatriots competed at various tournaments on Friday and Saturday.
The Spartans got in on the action as well, as Bernalillo High School made the long trek south to Los Lunas to compete in the Tom Torres Duals. The Cleveland boys joined them there, while the Cleveland boys JV team stayed in town to compete at the Southwest Shootout.
Speaking of the Southwest Shootout, that’s where everyone else was this weekend.
The Rams boys and girls both competed at the meet, which was hosted at RRHS on Friday and Saturday. The Storm girls squad was also in attendance, as was the Rams boys JV team.
The big winner from the weekend tournaments was the Cleveland Storm boys team, who returned to Rio Rancho with the Tom Torres trophy in hand after taking first place at the Los Lunas High School event, beating out their hosts for the top spot. The Storm went undefeated in the tournament’s final rounds, grabbing victories over Atrisco Heritage, Los Lunas and Las Cruces with a total point differential of 156-55.
The Rio Rancho boys put up a strong showing in their home event as well, taking fourth place at the Southwest Shootout, which saw 23 of the state’s top teams descend on the City of Vision for an all-out battle royale.
On the girls side of the Southwest Shootout, the Storm made the medal stand, taking third place. The Rams finished in fifth.
Next up, both the boys and the girls teams from both high schools will be heading south for the Las Cruces Invite Dec. 13-14.
