Bernalillo Softball legend reflects on her time
BERNALILLO — Bernalillo High School softball began off season workouts for the 2025-26 season this month, and one of the best to ever put on the Spartan uniform had some advice for any new players.
“Always remember to play for each other and pick each other up. Embrace the challenges that come your way and trust in your abilities. Don’t lose yourself during the process, and learn to play for a purpose greater than yourself,” former Bernalillo Spartan center fielder Ashlyn Chavez said.
While a member of the Bernalillo varsity softball team, Chavez helped the Spartans to four-straight winning seasons.
Chavez, who was a four-year varsity player, begins a new journey at the University of New Mexico but will always be grateful for her time on the diamond.
“I am super grateful that I have got to play for as long as I have, and I cannot imagine how my life would have been without it,” Chavez said.
This past season, Chavez was one of two Spartan players to earn All-State honors (along with outfielder Nieva Montoya), and the only Spartan to make the 2025 NMHSCA All-Star team.
“I am really thankful that I was with them all for a long time, and I wish the best for them,” Chavez said, who also mentioned that she loved playing with Atrisco Heritage’s Melanie Macias while on the All-Stars.
Chavez was known throughout the Spartan program as “Squeaks,” and mentioned that the long road trips would be something that she cherishes for the rest of her life.
“The bus rides is something I will miss, just traveling with the girls. Having a long bus ride, playing, playing well, it was always very fun,” said Chavez, who also mentioned that Spartan great Daniella “Pony” Cordova was a player that she looked up to.
The Spartans will enter the season as one of the best softball teams in 4A, and will rely heavily on players like Kylee Herrera and Bella Perez.
