Two local karate students win grand champion titles in martial arts tourney (with video)
Mike Ortiz and Heavenly Gutierrez won grand champions at the USAMA Grand Internationals tournament Sunday.
Both are members of the Shorei Ryu Karate Studio in Rio Rancho.
Ortiz, a brown belt, was a double winner. He won grand champion in kata and in weapons.
Gutierrez won in the youth kata division.
Kata is a series of pre-designed movements simulating an attack, counter and counter attack. Ortiz performed a Goju Ryu kata called Sepai.
For his win in weapons, he chose the sai.
The tournament was held at Embassy Suites Hotel & Spas.
