RIO RANCHO — “Being ready for the opportunity once it was given.”

It has been a waiting game for Storm senior Noah Escudero, but after an announcement last week, trusting the process has now paid off.

Cleveland’s go-to tight end this past season revealed on Instagram his commitment to Western New Mexico University, continuing his football career with the Mustangs.

“I had some talks with the coaches; they're very positive. You know, they love my skill set, my play style, and I fit in well with our offense. That encouraged me to go there,” Escudero said. “I also just wanted to stay close to home. Being far enough away to feel independent, but close enough to home where my parents can come and watch me every weekend.”

An easy decision comes after a process that wasn’t so simple for the recent state champion. While others had offers flying in, Escudero’s college recruitment was slow to start.

“I was obviously a little bit discouraged, seeing people around me, people in other states, getting opportunities and stuff like that,” Escudero said. “But really, I just kept praying, and I knew that God was going to lead me on his path that he has for me, and I knew that he was going to bless me with opportunities.”

Those opportunities became more apparent after being a redzone threat for the Storm this past season, hauling in three touchdowns and posting 100 yards receiving in the championship run.

Next thing Escudero knew, he was getting calls from coaches and going on visits, a reality that had always been a dream since he started playing football at the age of 6.

“It felt super surreal, going on those visits, having coaches call me every single day,” Escudero said. “Wanting this as a little kid and finally being in the position to make a decision like this.”

On top of his faith, family and supporters helping him along the way, Escudero credits Cleveland football for playing a pivotal role in his development and journey.

“Cleveland High School has really shaped me to be a better man,” Escudero said. “On and off the football field. I had amazing coaches by my side, each and every day, who were helping me to get to the next level. I really could not have asked for a better four years at a high school program.”

While he will be leaving his electric blue colors behind, Cleveland is not leaving Escudero entirely. Fellow senior Connor Steele will be joining him with the Mustangs next season.

“One of my best friends throughout high school, Connor Steele, also committed when we went on our visit together,” Escudero said. “Having them there to bond with, to grow with, and to go through this experience with, definitely helped.”

So, for the aspiring athletes looking to make the jump to the college level, let Escudero’s journey be a reminder: sooner or later, your time will come.

“I would say (to younger athletes), don't get discouraged. No matter how hard things may get, or how low times may seem, don't get discouraged,” Escudero said. “Keep your head up, keep working. You know your time is going to come. You're going to get your opportunity, and once you do get that opportunity, make the most of it.”
