Storm tennis camp builds program for the future
A camp attendee jumps up to make a play on the ball. The youth tennis camp was hosted by CHS Tennis.
On June 11, the Cleveland High School tennis team held its annual youth tennis camp, which included boys and girls aged 7-15.
“It’s nice to see all these kids; I mean, we have 27 of them this year,” Cleveland tennis player Alison Cato, who will be a senior, said. “Teaching all these kids is just so rewarding, and it is so nice to make these connections with these kids and hopefully; we are building the new generation of tennis players.”
The camp concluded June 12, and each day including snacks and T-shirts.
“They are the future of this team, so I am just out here trying to coach them up, “ Cleveland tennis player Ethan Hendricks, an incoming junior, said. “My eighth-grade year, I went to this same camp. I remember all the coaches here: Coach LaCour, Coach Gena, Coach Danny; I remember them all.”
Hendricks was one of the coaches at camp, the District 1-5A champ this past year, and a member of the Cleveland soccer team.

“I’ve learned how to serve the ball; some technique on how to hold the racket. I’m just trying to get better skills,” attendee Elle Hanchett said. “I don’t really play tennis, just with my family sometimes on the weekends, but everyone should try sports because they’re fun.”
Coaches, along with players on the girls and boys tennis teams, led the training which included stations, matches, games and working on the perfect serve.
“We played a lot of games, there were, like, stations where we were able to learn different skills like how to serve correctly. It was a fun day,” attendee Presley Dominguez said.
