Storm boys second, Rams teams third at Harper

ALBUQUERQUE — The Rio Rancho High School boys and girls track and field teams each finished third at the 26-team Richard Harper Memorial last weekend, while the Cleveland boys finished second.

The Los Alamos Hilltoppers won both divisions with a 105-82 edge over the CHS boys.

The Cleveland boys had first-place finishes from Grant Wade in the discus (153-7), Stratton Shufelt in the shot put (58-8½) and Jordan Mora in the javelin (180-1).

Finishing second for the Storm were Shufelt in the discus (153-6), Isaac Medrano in the javelin (177-5) and Tyler Griffith in the 300-meter hurdles (40.59 seconds) and long jump (22-9 ¾).

Placing third for CHS were Michael Haynes in the 400 (50.23), Wade in the shot (51-6½), and the 4x200 (1:31.2), 4x400 (3:21.31) and 4x800 (8:24.09) relay teams.

• Three Rams distance runners carried the third-place squad: Charlie Vause won the 1,600 (4:06.49), Cody Sullivan was right behind him in second (4:31.02); Skyler Galbraith was third in the 3,200 (9:38.69).

The Rams’ medley (3:31.19) and 4x800 (10:00.65) relay teams placed first; the 4x100 quartet (41.84) finished second.

• For the Rams girls, Arianna Valenzuela had first, second and thirds: She won the discus (134-7), was runner-up in the shot (36-1 1/2) and third in the javelin (123-10).

Valenzuela’s teammate, Ryanne Huntington, topped her in the shot (36-3); and RRHS’s Madeline Hostetler was runner-up in the javelin (126-10).

Ana Zarate-Aguilar was third in the 400 (2:28.72) and ran a leg on the Rams’ second-place 4x800 (10:00.65) relay squad.

• As for the Cleveland girls, Jaylee Gandert was first in the javelin (143-1) and second in the discus (125).

Morgan James was third in the 300-hurdles (47.33), and the Storm’s 4x800 (10:14.45) relay squad was third.(Kiana Jamerson had the fastest time in the preliminaries for the 400 (58.9, a state-qualifying mark), but was eighth in the finals (1:03.28).
