Maggie Cordova Elementary fifth grader Bell Savary recently won the elementary bullseye division at the Western National Championship archery competition in Sandy, Utah, earning a score of 275 out of 300.

Bell outshot 182 elementary females for the first-ever National Archery in the School Program national title won by a youth representing New Mexico. Almost2,000 young archers from 25 states competed for individual and team awards at the NASP Western Nationals Championship held at the Mountain America Center April 28-29,

Overall, students from 13 New Mexico schools attended the 2023 NASP Western Nationals Championship, including Maggie Cordova Elementary and Rio Rancho Middle School.

NASP is a national in-school archery program that introduces target archery to students in fourth through 12th grades.

Archuleta gets postseason honor

Former Cleveland High softball standout Ashley Archuleta, a 2021 graduate, has earned All-Mountain West First Team distinction, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.

As voted on by the conference coaches, the selection marks the second first-team award for Archuleta, the first two-time first team all-conference player for the University of New Mexico since Brandi Heimburg (2014 and 2015).

In her second season with the Lobos, Archuleta hit .437 with a .676 slugging percentage and .481 on-base percentage in conference play, leading the Lobos in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits (31), RBIs (18) and total bases (48). She had three doubles, four triples and two home runs, had a hit in 19 conference games and ended the season on a 10-game hitting streak. She also finished with a team-high six multiple RBI games.

The Rio Rancho native ranked tied for second in the MW in hits, tied for second in triples (four), fifth in batting average, sixth in slugging percentage and total bases, tied for 10th in on-base percentage and tied for 12th in RBIs. Defensively, the second baseman was sixth in the conference in assists with 47 and tied for second with six turned double plays.

UNM was one of five MW schools (Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State) to place multiple players on the 15-member first team. Archuleta’s UNM teammate, Rachael Hathoot also earned a spot on the MW postseason squad.

Borrego honored; Luttrell a champ

Former Cleveland High wrestler and current assistant mat coach Macario “Mac” Borrego has been named the 2023 USAW Southern Plains Regional Freestyle Developmental Coach of the Year.

Borrego was a state champ at 112 pounds in 2011, and state runner-up at 120 in 2012.te

Borrego is often seen at many practices, camps and clinics in the spring and summer. He also attends many regional and national events helping New Mexico wrestlers develop in the Olympic styles and compete on the regional and national level. Borrego will now be nominated for the National DECOY award, which will be awarded and recognized at the nationals this summer in Fargo, North Dakota.

In other news from the Storm wrestling program, two-time state champ Roman Luttrell Roman Luttrell is the USAW Western Regional Greco Champion in the 16U 113-pound bracket, after outscoring his opponents 36-2 and earning four technical falls along the way.

Meet the Lobo coaches

The University of New Mexico “Coaches Caravan” starts here in the City of Vision on Thursday, June 22.

Lobo football coach Danny Gonzales and men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino are among the coaches expected to greet the crowd and talk about their teams and the upcoming season at the Rio Rancho Events Center from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Sandoval County Lobo Club. There is no cost to attend, and finger foods and a cash bar will be available.

Senior Olympics are in Las Cruces

The annual Senior Olympics State Summer Games will take place in Las Cruces June 7-11 with an anticipated 400-600 active adults 50 years of age and older competing in 27 individual sporting events.

Games will take place at multiple sport venues throughout Las Cruces and New Mexico State University.

As the mission of the New Mexico Senior Olympics Organization is to highlight active aging and senior sports, everyone 50+ has the opportunity to still register for the ’23 State Summer Games. The sports include Air Gun, Archery, Badminton, Basketball Free-throw, 3 Point Shot, Cornhole, Billiards, Track & Field, Golf, Horseshoes, Pickleball, Powerwalk, Shuffleboard, Dance and Talent and Swimming, with many more.

Seniors compete in five-year age divisions, starting at 50-54 and ending with 95-99. The Game schedule is available at nmseniorolympics.org and registration is available online. Registration is $60 for up to five sports and will remain open until May 15. You can also register by phone by calling 1-888-623-6676, during normal business hours Monday through Friday.

Pre-pandemic, the Summer Games attracted more than 1,100 senior participants.

Every other year, the Summer Games qualify New Mexico seniors for the National Seniors Games. The Senior Olympics are funded in part by the N.M. Department of Aging and Long-Term Services. Summer youth hoops camps back in RR

Rio Rancho High School boys’ basketball coach Wally Salata is already looking forward to his 14 annual Rio Rancho Rams basketball summer youth camps, coming up in late May and June.

Each camp stresses the fundamentals of the game and is for boys and girls going into kindergarten through ninth grade in August.

Each session runs from 9 a.m. to noon each day and costs $125 in advance, $150 for walk-ups.

The sessions are set for May 30-June 2; June 19-23; and June 26-30.

Campers will learn the basic skills and fundamentals needed, with 5-on-5 action every day, Campers will receive a camp T-shirt and a basketball.

Cleveland High School is holding a “next Level” basketball skills camp for boys and girls heading into grades 3-9 in the 2023-24 school year.

Spring baseball camp for kids at RRHS

The U.S. Baseball Academy’s Training Program is making another stop at Rio Rancho High School this spring, and registration is already filling up.

The four-day camp takes place June 12-15 and is a full-day camp for boys and girls ages 7-15.

The camp includes skill training during the morning session, a lunch break, and then afternoon sessions will focus on competition drills, situational baseball games and even a wiffleball world series.

Campers will receive a T-shirt and certificate and be eligible to win Nike prizes.

RRHS baseball coach Ron Murphy, New Mexico’s leader in victories, will operate the camp.

CHS holds tennis camp

Cleveland High School is holding a tennis camp for kids ages 7-15 June 20-21 on the school’s courts.

It will take place June 20-21 from 9 a.m. to noon both days.

Check in on the first day is 8:30.

The cost is $75 for those pre-registered and includes a snack and T-shirt. The cost is $85 for the drop-ins.
