RIO RANCHO – The Cleveland High School Cheer team has something to, well, cheer about after garnering six All-American titles at the recent 2024 Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Summer Camp in Loveland, Colorado, one of the most prestigious and intense cheer events on the calendar.
Six CHS seniors — Miranda McQuerry, Nyana Valerio, Ahriana Ramirez, Rylee Sullivan, Angelique Garcia and Ashley Camilli — were awarded All-American status at the conclusion of the camp.
Head coach Maddison Weaver, a former CHS cheerleader who took over the position in June, says the girls worked extremely hard and earned their honors.
“Our girls really do work just as hard as any other athlete, with a season that truly never ends,” Weaver says.
Becoming a UCA All-American is a major challenge, she says. Athletes are expected to excel across all areas, including jumps, stunts, tumbling and dance. Perhaps even more challenging, says Weaver, is that they need to do everything with a smile and enthusiastic energy.
"They must also exhibit high energy, sharp motions and strong crowd engagement in their performances,” Weaver says. “Leadership and teamwork play a crucial role as well, as athletes must demonstrate a positive attitude and the ability to inspire and support their teammates. Only a select few are chosen as All-Americans, making it a significant accomplishment.”
The prestigious title opens numerous doors for these CHS seniors, according to Weaver. UCA All-Americans are invited to perform in major parades, such as the London New Year's Day Parade and the Thanksgiving Parade in Philadelphia.
“Additionally, they may have the chance to participate in international cheer events and camps, further honing their skills and gaining valuable experience,” she says.
