Rio Rancho High School girls basketball head coach Lori Mabrey has been selected as a finalist for the National High School Athletics Coaches Association National Coach of the Year award.

“I’ve given a lot of my life to basketball and to be recognized feels really great,” Mabrey said. “A lot of people have helped me along the way, and I owe them a large bit of gratitude.”

Mabrey is heading into her third year as the head coach for the girls basketball team and is already gaining national attention.

“It’s nice to get honored for something for a sport that I have so much passion for,” Mabrey said.

According to the NHSACA, the National Coach of the Year awards a coach on the basis of tenure, coaching record, professional honors and service to the sport and youth of America.

This past year, Mabry’s team went 19-10, which included a six-game winning streak and a spot in the state tournament.
