RIO RANCHO — In Rio Rancho, the third-seeded Rams rode a big second quarter to a decisive 65-37 win over No. 14 Clovis in the opening round of the 5A girls tournament.

Leading 11-8 after a back-and-forth first quarter, Rio Rancho (25-4) uncorked 23 in the second to take a commanding 34-19 halftime lead. The Rams went on to hold Clovis scoreless four-and-a-half minutes into the second half, all but assuring another game for the District 1-5A champs.

Madi Martinez, Rio Rancho’s star sophomore guard, keyed the Rams with a game-high 25 points, overcoming a quiet first quarter to score 11 in the game-swinging second. Daysia Jackson and Lilly Martinez — Madi’s sister — added 15 and 6 points, respectively.

Bryna Petrev led Clovis (13-16) with 10 points, scoring six in the second quarter.
