Bernalillo volleyball team gets visit from college coaches
Trinidad State head coach Karli Bustos spent a ton of time with each girl, making sure they did not add an extra step when they came to hit the ball.
The Trinidad State Trojans’ volleyball coaches made a visit to the Bernalillo Spartan Learning Academy gymnasium July 22-23 to give some pointers to the Bernalillo High School volleyball program.
“We are meeting with the Trinidad State coaches, and they are running a camp for us. We are trying to get some insight and really just get our girls more reps,” head coach Ariana Aragón-Borg said.
Aragón-Borg is entering her first year as a head coach. For the past two years, she was an assistant coach for BHS and also served as the C-team coach.
“We’re really just trying to get them more experience and opportunities so that we can expand our program and really be competitive in our district,” Aragón-Borg said.
The Trinidad coaches in attendance were head coach Karli Bustos and assistant coach Damon Salazar.
“The coaches are teaching us how to do it slowly and just really focus on each step — not just throwing yourself out there but, like, being meaningful with each thing that you are doing and with each part of your body,” said senior Savannah Garcia said, who plays right side for BHS.
During the two-day camp, the girls worked on passing, setting and hitting with a strong emphasis on tweaking the mechanics, including footwork, positioning and explosiveness.
“This is a big opportunity for the program and everyone here,” said senior Valerie Coriz, a setter for the team. “Expect bigger, better things from us this year.”
