Following Wednesday evening’s APS Metro Championships quarterfinal games, only one City of Vision team remained in the hunt for the blue traveling trophy: the Cleveland High boys’ basketball team.

The Storm improved to 11-2 after a 73-57 victory over La Cueva at Albuquerque High.

  • Tonight (Jan. 12) at 7:15 p.m., the Storm meet District 1-05A foe Atrisco Heritage Academy in a semifinal at Volcano Vista’s Ring of Fire. AHA beat West Mesa 66-64 in Wednesday’s other final.

The boys’ other semifinal game, also at the Ring of Fire at 5:30, features host Volcano Vista, a 62-58 winner over Highland, and Sandia, which beat Eldorado 56-47.

That’s a rematch of last March’s 5A championship game, featuring coaching brother vs. coaching brother: Danny Brown of HHS vs. Greg Brown of Volcano Vista.

Tonight’s winners square off in the championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Highland High; tonight’s semifinal losers meet at Highland at noon for third place.

In the consolation bracket, the Rio Rancho boys (7-6) beat host Del Norte 57-36. The Rams meet Hobbs today at 5:30, again at Del Norte.

If the Rams win, they’ll be in the ninth-place game Saturday at Eldorado at 11:30 a.m.; if they lose to Hobbs, they’ll be in the 11th place game at Eldorado at 10 a.m.

  • In the girls’ games Wednesday, Cleveland dropped an 80-36 contest to defending 5A champ Hobbs, and the Rio Rancho girls fell to an equally tough foe, Sandia, 76-48.

Both city girls teams are at Sandia High today: The Storm face Eldorado, featuring the best player in the state (Bella Hines), at 5:30. The Eagles beat the Storm (7-7) 70-58 at EHS on dec. 12.

The Rams (8-4) face Gallup in the nightcap at Sandia at 7:15.

Regardless of how the girls’ teams fare, they’ll play their Metro finales at Valley High School Saturday. The losers today at Sandia meet at 1 p.m.; the winners meet at 2:30 p.m.

If it’s the Rams vs. the Storm, it’ll be their second meeting of the season. RRHS beat Cleveland 54-40 in the championship game of the Bobby Rodriguez tournament in Santa Fe in early December.
